A UK medical professional has raised concerns about the long-term use of omeprazole, one of the most widely prescribed drugs in the country. The NHS has also issued warnings about the potential side effects of prolonged use, urging patients not to rely on the medication for extended periods.
Between 2022 and 2023, more than 73 million prescriptions of omeprazole were dispensed in England. Commonly prescribed to treat acid reflux, heartburn, and stomach ulcers, omeprazole is often taken alongside painkillers such as ibuprofen, which can irritate the stomach lining.
While the medication works by reducing acid production through blocking the stomach’s “proton pumps,” experts caution that extended use could do more harm than good

NHS Advice and Risks of Overuse
The NHS recommends that patients who buy omeprazole without a prescription should not take it for longer than two weeks. Prolonged use may mask underlying conditions that need medical investigation.
Potential side effects include:
- Low magnesium levels (leading to fatigue and weakness)
- Vitamin B12 deficiency (increasing risk of nerve damage, tingling sensations, and cognitive issues)
- Bone problems and fractures (linked to weakened bones with long-term use)
- Potassium deficiencies (which can affect heart health)
Doctor’s Warning Goes Viral
Dr. Ahmed, known as Dr A on TikTok, shared his concerns with his 366,000+ followers. He recounted seeing a patient who had been on omeprazole for eight years, warning that many patients are placed on the drug long-term without proper review.
“Using omeprazole for more than three months can lower your magnesium, making you tired. Six months to a year, potassium and B12 levels drop. Beyond a year, bone fractures become a serious risk,” Dr A explained.
He stressed that while omeprazole helps control symptoms, it does not address the root causes of acid reflux or heartburn. These could include ulcers, bacterial or fungal overgrowth, or dysfunction of the oesophagus.

The Takeaway
Omeprazole remains an effective treatment when used short-term, but experts warn against prolonged reliance without medical oversight. Patients experiencing ongoing heartburn or reflux should consult their GP to investigate underlying causes instead of masking symptoms.
As the NHS continues to issue guidance, medical professionals emphasize that stomach acid plays an important role in digestion and health, and suppressing it indefinitely may come at a cost.
