A groundbreaking study has found that the most widely used COVID-19 vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna, may deliver unexpected benefits for cancer patients — potentially helping their immune systems fight tumors.

According to research published in Nature, patients with advanced lung or skin cancer who received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine within 100 days of beginning immunotherapy lived significantly longer than those who did not. The findings come from a collaboration between the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the University of Florida.

Researchers discovered that the benefits weren’t tied to COVID-19 infection prevention. Instead, the mRNA technology itself seems to stimulate the immune system, improving its ability to attack cancer cells.

“The vaccine acts like a siren to activate immune cells throughout the body,” explained Dr. Adam Grippin, the study’s lead author. “We’re sensitizing immune-resistant tumors to immune therapy.”

The findings suggest that mRNA’s immune-activating properties might complement checkpoint inhibitors, a class of cancer drugs designed to unmask tumors that evade immune detection. This discovery could pave the way for combining existing vaccines with cancer treatments — or even designing new mRNA vaccines tailored for cancer therapy

How mRNA Could Boost Cancer Immunity

Messenger RNA (mRNA) carries genetic instructions that tell the body how to make specific proteins. While it gained fame through COVID-19 vaccines, scientists have been studying mRNA for years as a way to develop personalized cancer vaccines.

Dr. Jeff Coller, an mRNA expert at Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in the study, described the results as “a very good clue that mRNA medicines are continuing to surprise us in how beneficial they can be to human health.”

Researchers analyzed records from nearly 1,000 advanced cancer patients receiving checkpoint inhibitors at MD Anderson. Those who had received Pfizer or Moderna vaccines showed notably better outcomes. Among lung cancer patients, survival rates nearly doubled three years after treatment. Melanoma patients also experienced longer survival times, though the final data is still being collected.

Interestingly, traditional non-mRNA vaccines, such as flu shots, showed no similar benefit.

What’s Next

The research team plans to conduct a more controlled trial to determine whether pairing mRNA vaccines with immunotherapy could become a standard cancer treatment strategy. They are also exploring how mRNA technology could be modified to create custom cancer vaccines that target unique tumor markers.

While more evidence is needed, the study underscores a growing recognition that mRNA vaccines could transform medicine beyond infectious disease prevention.

“These findings highlight the broad potential of mRNA technology,” Dr. Grippin said. “It’s more than a vaccine platform — it’s a way to awaken the immune system.
